I added a few details to the Obituary that was published in the Des Moines newspaper for submission to the Luck paper.
Johanne Kristine Johansen Hansen of Des Moines, Iowa, died on Saturday, July 25, 2020, at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, as a result of pneumonia, a complication following surgery.
Johanne was born in Luck, Wisconsin on March 31,1925, the youngest daughter of Frederikke and Ansgar Johansen. She married Thorvald Hansen in June 1948. They met at Grand View College (now University), a location which went on to play a dominant role in the rest of their lives.
Johanne served as a pastor’s wife for many years; after serving in several congregations, Thorvald & Johanne moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1965. Johanne worked at the Grand View College library for over 20 years. She was a long time active member of Luther Memorial Church located in Des Moines.
Many of Johanne’s interests stemmed from her Danish heritage: genealogy, and Danish counted cross stitch, as well as speaking and reading Danish. Other creative outlets were knitting mittens and stocking caps for children in need. She worked on quilts for the less fortunate with her church group. She was an avid reader, kept up with her many nieces and nephews by email and visited Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family. She celebrated her 95th birthday with family members via Zoom due to the coronavirus isolation.
Johanne is survived by three daughters: Ellen Hansen of Ankeny, IA, Barb Miller of Arlington, TX, and Nancy (Patrick) O’Keefe of Urbandale, IA. She had six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thorvald Hansen, and her four siblings, Halvdan, AneMarie, Valdemar, and Christian.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Luther Memorial Church or to the Grand View University fund for students in need: GV Cares Fund at 1200 Grand View Ave., Des Moines, Iowa 50316.
