Secret Water Beads - Weird Science

Okay, some products that are out in the world are interesting, amazing and sometimes just weird.  Secret Water Beads fall into one or all of those categories.
I found them at the Flea Market yesterday and decided to give them a go.
The beads start out as tiny, hard beads, the side of a mustard seed.
The instructions say to put the beads into your container.
Add a cup of water for each package of beads.
Wait 4 - 8 hours for the beads to swell.
And I was amazed that they did swell into a gel ball.
After about 6 hours they were the size of marbles.
Then you insert your plant.
According to the seller, this bamboo will grow just great in the beads.
You only water occasionally and the beads are supposed to last forever.
There is something about not using city water, but luckily I have a well.
If nothing else, the process of hydrating the beads was pretty amazing,
so now we'll see if my bamboo loves them.
Certainly less messy than potting soil and this amount of beads cost $3.
According to the info, many plants are supposed to grow well in the beads.

Better living through chemistry.
