Merry Christmas

So much of 2020 has been spent agonizing of what was lost or what we could not do.  There was also the sadness of losing a beloved aunt, a second cousin, a treasured uncle, and a close friend. As we approach the end of the year, I am looking for a silver lining or two.

What if the Covid-19 virus is the world's pause button?A picture containing bird, woodpecker, outdoor, perched

This pause is giving us a chance to bring families closer together,
to make us appreciate the first 3 months of this year; mine was pack jammed with gym time,

to give students exposure to a new style of learning,

to give student-athletes time for their bodies to heal,
to give business owners a chance to re-imagine their businesses; I am loving the drive-thru,

to give friends time to connect on Zoom and, like my Colorado pals & me, play Contract Bridge that way,
to give Mother Earth a chance to clean the air,
to give each of a us a chance to look at what is important; my calendar will change for good,
to give pets the love and attention they crave, I have spent many hours with a cat on my lap,

to give bird watchers, like me, a solid excuse to stare out the window,
to give readers an excuse to read to their heart's content; or, like me, buy books to put in a stack,
to give gardening a chance to be a beloved hobby,
to give us time for writing letters & notes and mailing them,

to give us a good excuse to binge-watch a few (or, like me, many, many) shows on Netflix,

to give us time to focus on inequality & racial injustice; lots of work to do yet, but we, as a nation, are finally started,
to give us the chance, the constitutional right and a good reason, to vote; now we just need mail in ballots in all 50 states,
to give us insight into, and gratitude for, all that we have,A picture containing tree, outdoor, plant, nature

to remind us that no matter where we live on this planet, or how different we are, when it comes to this virus, we all are in the very same storm, even if we are not all in the same boat.

Ha’ det godt in 2021
My beloved Aunt Johanne, who left us this year, used to close her emails to me with Ha’ det godt,

Danish for ‘have it good’.
