As part of the Luck Winter Carnival, there are a number of volunteers who cut blocks of ice out of the lake and build an ice castle. Back in the 60's the palace was huge, there was an ice rink out front and sometimes the blocks were carved to spell out LUCK WINTER CARNIVAL.
So, here's the Do It Yourself Version from this year's construction.
Can you see the ice block? Okay, first step...find a bunch of guys who like to hang out on the ice. |
Second, get a real long chain saw to cut the ice blocks |
3rd - get a couple of poles with picks on the end to move the ice blocks around. |
Fourth - move the ice block over to the edge of open water (OPEN WATER???) |
Fifth - Bring in a big ice tongs on a tractor. |
6th - Swing the tongs over to the crazy guy standing by the edge of open water. |
7th - Have the crazy guy attach the tongs to the ice block. |
8th - Use the tongs to pull the ice out of the water |
Ninth - tote the block of ice across the ice |
10 - Be amazed at the guys who want to hang out on the ice. |
11th - Watch a big chunk of ice be transported |
Be amazed at 'one big ice cube'! |
Finally, move the ice block to the shoot that loads the trailer.
Be amazed at how many guys are just standing around on the ice. |
Next, build a castle. |
The final results will be a beautiful ice palace. More photos to come after this weekend when we celebrate the Luck Winter Carnival with the Ice Palace as a center of attention.
All of this work is done by volunteers.
It is really a delight to have the ice palace back...it stirs up fond memories, and now is making new memories for the next generations.
Amazing, eh?

And I can't forget to say...How about those Packers!
